The binary .doc format is from 1997. Converting to DOCX makes the file smaller, safer and fully compatible with today's Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice.

Common questions

Why convert DOC to DOCX at all?

DOCX is the format Word has used since 2007: files are smaller (it's compressed XML), less corruption-prone, and supported by every modern editor. Some newer tools refuse the old binary .doc entirely.

Will tracked changes and comments survive?

The mainstream document features — styles, tables, images, headers, footnotes — convert faithfully. Exotic macro content (.doc with embedded VBA) does not carry over; macros are deliberately not preserved.

Can I go the other way, DOCX to DOC?

We deliberately don't offer that — downgrading to the 1997 format loses features and helps nobody. Convert to PDF instead if you need something universally readable.

Is there a file size limit?

Free users can convert files up to 25 MB without an account. Pro raises that to 500 MB per file with 3,000 credits a month; Business goes to 5 GB.
