How it works
Common questions
What is HEIC and why does my iPhone use it?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard. iPhones switched to HEIC as the default photo format in iOS 11 because it stores the same quality as JPG at roughly half the file size — great for storage, but inconvenient when sharing with non-Apple users or older apps.
Will my photo quality be preserved?
HEIC photos are typically captured at very high quality. When converting to JPG, Formatly uses 85% quality compression — which is visually indistinguishable from the original for photos taken in normal iPhone camera mode. Portrait mode depth data and Live Photo motion are not preserved in the JPG output.
Can I stop my iPhone from shooting in HEIC?
Yes — go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency." Your iPhone will then shoot in JPG by default. This uses slightly more storage but avoids compatibility issues when sharing photos.
Is there a file size limit?
Free users can convert HEIC files up to 25 MB without an account. Most iPhone photos are 2–6 MB, so the free tier covers typical use. Pro users get 500 MB per file and 3,000 credits a month. Business users get up to 5 GB.
