Modernize legacy files
AVI is a 1992 Microsoft format still common in camcorder footage, DVD rips, and archived recordings. MP4 is the modern standard — smaller files, better compatibility, and supported on every device made in the last decade.
Plays on phones
Most smartphones can't play AVI files natively. Converting to MP4 means your video will open directly in the Photos app on iPhone or Android without any third-party player required.
Private & secure
Your video files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed on our servers, never shared with third parties, and permanently deleted after 1 hour.

Common questions

Will converting AVI to MP4 reduce quality?

It depends on what codec is inside the AVI. If the AVI contains an H.264 stream, Formatly can remux it to MP4 without re-encoding — zero quality loss. If it contains an older codec like DivX, Xvid, or MJPEG, the video will be re-encoded to H.264 at high quality. The output will look visually equivalent to the source in almost all cases.

Why are AVI files so large?

Many AVI files were encoded with older, less efficient codecs and without the compression improvements introduced over the last 20 years. H.264 (used in MP4) achieves far better compression at the same quality — so your MP4 output will often be 30–60% smaller than the original AVI, without any perceptible quality difference.

Can I upload AVI files to YouTube directly?

YouTube accepts AVI files, but it re-encodes them to H.264/MP4 during upload — which adds processing time and can introduce quality variation. Uploading an MP4 directly gives you full control over the quality settings used and results in faster upload processing on YouTube's end.

Is there a file size limit?

Free users can convert AVI files up to 25 MB without an account, or up to 10 conversions per day with a free account. Pro users get 500 MB per file and 3,000 credits a month. Business users get up to 5 GB.
