Common questions

Will the video quality change when converting MOV to MP4?

In most cases, Formatly performs a fast remux (container swap) without re-encoding the video. If the MOV contains an H.264 or H.265 track — as most iPhone and Mac recordings do — the video data is moved directly into an MP4 container with no quality loss and very fast conversion. Re-encoding only happens when the codec inside the MOV is incompatible with MP4.

Why does my MOV file not play on Windows?

Windows does not include QuickTime natively. Without Apple's QuickTime player or the QuickTime codecs installed, Windows Media Player and File Explorer cannot play MOV files. Converting to MP4 sidesteps this entirely — MP4 is natively supported on Windows 10 and 11 without any extra software.

Does the converted MP4 keep the original audio?

Yes — audio tracks (including stereo, multi-channel, and AAC audio) are preserved in the MP4 output. Subtitles and chapter markers embedded in the MOV are also carried across when possible.

Is there a file size limit?

Free users can convert MOV files up to 25 MB without an account, or up to 10 conversions per day with a free account. Pro users get 500 MB per file and 3,000 credits a month. Business users get up to 5 GB.
