How it works
Common questions
Why convert GIF to MP4?
GIFs are massively oversized for what they do. A 10-second GIF can be 20+ MB, while the same content as MP4 is often under 1 MB. Smaller files = faster page loads, lower bandwidth bills, and smoother playback. MP4 also supports better colour depth (24-bit vs GIF's 256 colours) so gradients look cleaner.
Will the MP4 autoplay and loop like a GIF?
Yes — most platforms (Twitter, Discord, Reddit, Slack, Notion, web browsers with <video autoplay loop muted>) treat short MP4s exactly like GIFs. They autoplay silently and loop. The replacement is invisible to viewers.
Will I lose animation quality?
For most GIFs you'll see the same or better quality — MP4 supports 16.7 million colours versus GIF's 256-colour palette, so gradients and skin tones improve. Very fast-motion or detailed GIFs might show slight compression artefacts at default quality, but Formatly uses high-quality H.264 encoding by default.
Is there a file size limit?
Free users can convert GIF files up to 25 MB without an account, or up to 10 conversions per day with a free account. Pro users get 500 MB per file and 3,000 credits a month. Business users get up to 5 GB.
